Mill Valley is a city in Marin County, California, United States, located about 14 miles (23 km) north of San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge and 52 miles from Napa Valley. Mill Valley is located on the western and northern shores of Richardson Bay, and the eastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. Beyond the flat coastal area and marshlands, it occupies narrow wooded canyons, mostly of second-growth redwoods, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. Nestled at the foot of Mount Tamalpais, homes in the Marin County city range from 500-square-foot hunter's cabins to multimillion-dollar mansions tucked away on winding, narrow lanes under the redwoods.
Coffee is king in Mill Valley. Downtown, three separate coffee shops do a brisk business. At the Depot, as the sunny town center is called, strollers, tricycles, and teenagers kicking hacky sacks relax in the open-air plaza, which now houses an independent bookstore and cafe. The Depot is also a jumping-off spot for hikers and mountain bikers heading up the slopes of Mount Tamalpais. The area offers a wide range of hiking and biking trails, featuring scenic views of Mount Tamalpais and the Marin Headlands, as well as the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Some of the most popular nearby trails include Tennessee Valley, Miwok trail, Dias trail and Mountain Home trail, to name only a few.
Mill Valley offers many outdoor activities. Idelic opportunities for hiking, cycling, beaches, surfing, fishing, boating, kayaking and parks abound. You can also schedule activities around the many seasonal events such as the migration of whales, bird watching, and annual festivals. As the groomed playing fields at the community center attest, sports are big in Mill Valley with soccer, baseball, and lacrosse leagues as popular options.
Nightlife in Mill Valley is full of live music, theatre and films. The town of Mill Valley is known for its beauty and is a popular destination for visitors. Sweetwater Music Hall (a local venture started by investors among whom are Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Furthur) is a venue that brings nationally recognized entertainment to Mill Valley and also acts as a stage for local and emerging talent to perform and experiment with their music. Also enjoy the local cinama, theater or shopping at the local boutique stores.
